Family Therapy vs. Individual Therapy

Family therapy involves individual therapy as it relates to interactions. So, in a way, Family therapy is a bunch of individuals going through therapy together. But what is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is an effective way to combat some very difficult life struggles such as addiction, divorce or anxiety. Many people believe that individual therapy looks like someone lying on a couch while the therapist asks a series of questions and provides no answers. Well, this is one type of therapy; Freudian therapy. However, many therapists have come up with other theories and practices for providing help to clients. The goal of therapy always centers around making sure the client feels happy and empowered and in control of oneself.

For example, person-centered therapy (Rogerian Therapy) helps the client to explore emotions and thoughts in an environment in which the therapist provides unconditional love and a listening ear. While still another method, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, involves coming up with goals in how to change problematic thinking or behavior. Or rather, CBT encourages the client to accept the negative thoughts as they come and then replace them with more positive ones. By bringing attention to thoughts and actions which otherwise would pass by unconsciously clients are often able to overcome addiction or bring ADHD into check.

Individual therapy or group therapy can help people with a variety of concerns. It has shown to improve anxiety, depression, addiction, ADHD, relationships, sleep disorders and many, many more. Individual therapy will improve your quality of life. The biggest hurdle people face in attaining mental health has historically been accepting the idea that someone else can help. Trained professionals have practiced with many clients and understand the nuances of how to discuss painful topics.
